Song of the Earth is a large-scale work by David Longstreth, performed with his band Dirty Projectors, Berlin-based chamber orchestra s t a r g a z e, and guests including Phil Elverum, Steve Lacy, and author David Wallace-Wells. Originally written in six intense weeks during the pandemic and early fatherhood, Longstreth spent three years refining it across studios in the Netherlands, L.A., and NYC.
His most ambitious venture into concert music, Song of the Earth premiered in the U.S. at a sold-out Disney Hall performance in March 2024, with earlier previews in London, Hamburg, and Amsterdam. While it shares a title with Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, Longstreth’s piece is entirely original, though deeply influenced by Mahler’s emotional and thematic spirit.
