Toy:Box — the previously unreleased Toy album — was released on January 7, 2022, just before David Bowie’s birthday. The package features sleeve artwork designed by Bowie with a baby photo blended with his adult face, plus a 16-page full-color book of unseen photos by Frank Ockenfels 3.
Recorded after Bowie’s Glastonbury 2000 performance, Toy captures live studio sessions with his band revisiting songs from 1964–1971. Bowie aimed for a quick, ‘old school’ release, but the technology for surprise drops wasn’t available, delaying the album. Bowie then moved on, using some session tracks for his acclaimed 2002 album Heathen.
The box set includes a second CD/10” set of alternative mixes and B-sides, plus a third CD/10” set of unplugged and slightly electric versions of 13 Toy tracks.
