The Buddha of Suburbia, Bowie’s 19th album released in 1993, has a raw, unfinished feel. Created as a soundtrack for Hanif Kureishi’s drama, it blends Bowie’s past styles freely, paying homage to his roots. Collaborating with Erdal Kizilcay and engineer David Richards, Bowie explores alien soundscapes, from the jazzy South Horizon to the heartfelt Strangers When We Meet, and two versions of the title track—one tender, one triumphant with Lenny Kravitz on guitar.
