Cymande’s self-titled debut album in 1972 marked their emergence as pioneers of the black British music scene, blending reggae, Afro-tinged percussion, psychedelic touches, and funk into their unique “Nyah-rock” sound. Despite being embraced in the US, they were largely overlooked in the UK due to industry prejudice and disbanded in 1975 after releasing three albums. However, their influence has endured, with their music being sampled by legendary artists across genres, from DJ Kool Herc to De La Soul, The Wu-Tang Clan, Fatboy Slim, and The Fugees. Today, Cymande remains one of the most revered and sampled bands in hip hop, house, and dance music history.
