Originally self-released on cassette in 1986 with only 200 copies, Fuse quickly became a collector’s item, known for its distinctive purple cover and often selling for over £100. Recorded in Portsmouth by siblings Alison and Jim Shaw, it captures Cranes’ early, darker post-punk sound—sparse, industrial, and hypnotic.
Made on a 4-track in a garage, the sessions involved heavy experimentation, early sampling technology, and obsessive attention to detail. Legendary producer Martin Hannett (Joy Division, New Order) even singled out the original title track as “fucking great.”
