After leaving Suede in 1994 following the recording of Dog Man Star, Bernard Butler teamed up with David McAlmont for the 1995 album The Sound of McAlmont and Butler, featuring the Top 10 hit “Yes.” In 1997, Butler signed to Creation Records and released his self-titled solo debut in 1998, playing all instruments except drums and strings. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching #11 in the UK and spawning the singles “Stay,” “Not Alone,” and “Change of Heart.” For its 2022 reissue, Butler re-recorded all vocals and added occasional guitar overdubs.
