Anjimile’s The King is his first full-length since 2020’s Giver Taker, marking a dramatic shift in tone and theme. Opening with a lofty choir that gives way to dark arpeggios, the album dives deep into the grief, rage, and confusion of being Black and trans in America. Described as "an album of curses," The King is a raw reflection on the harsh realities of 2020, moving beyond the optimism of early sobriety into a stark confrontation with brutality. With most sounds crafted from Anjimile's acoustic guitar and voice, the album features contributions from Justine Bowe, Brad Allen Williams, Sam Gendel, and James Krivchenia, and was produced by Grammy-winning Shawn Everett.
